2013 Australian Dance Awards

“Canberra loves to dance and the event was a real showcase of achievement for Australia.”

Ausdance was delighted to host 2013 Australian Dance Awards  in Canberra on 5 August at The Playhouse. It is the first time the national awards ceremony have been held in Canberra, as a birthday gift for Canberra. Commencing with a ‘red carpet’ VIP event in the theatre foyer the Awards extended into formal presentations with performances that showcased some of the best Australian dancers and dance companies.

Chair of the Australian Dance Award Committee, Robina Beard OAM, said she was thrilled that the Australian Dance Awards is making its mark all around Australia. “After wonderful presentations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and  Perth in 2012, the Awards truly are the Australian dance awards. Canberra has always produced incredible dance and dancers and it is exciting that the dance profession gathered in 2013 for the presentations.”

The Australian Dance Awards recognise and honour professional Australian dance artists who have made an outstanding contribution to Australian dance. Awards are presented in eleven categories including the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

The 2013 Australian Dance Awards featured performances from some of Australia’s leading dance companies and independent choreographers in a night-of-nights for Australian Dance. Eleven awards were presented by luminaries from the dance world – and you may have been surprised to see just how many of them were from Canberra.

Initiated in 1986 by Keith Bain OAM, the dance community in NSW gathered each year at the Dancers’ Picnic to celebrate the International Dance Days Honours. In 1997, Ausdance NSW, with support from the City of Sydney and The Australian Ballet, established the Australian Dance Awards at the Sydney Opera House. Over time, the Awards have evolved into the industry’s ‘night of nights.’ In 2008 the Awards moved to Melbourne with Ausdance Victoria, then Ausdance QLD  in 2011 and Ausdance WA in 2012.
